Saying Goodbye to Joann Fabrics: A Walk Down Memory Lane
It’s a bittersweet moment, walking through the aisles of two Joann Fabrics stores one last time. As I strolled past rows of fabric, beads, and crafting supplies, I couldn’t help but reflect on my time working with the company from 1980 to 1985. In fact, I’ve put together a final walkthrough video that captures the essence of a store that’s now closing a chapter of its history. Be sure to stay till the end to see the video and pay tribute to this iconic store.
Back in the early 80s, I worked for Showcase of Fine Fabrics, which was part of Joann’s corporate family. Our store was a step above the traditional Joann Fabric locations. We specialized in high-end fabrics like Ultrasuede, silk, wool, and the luxurious Liberty of London prints, as well as other premium materials that you wouldn’t typically find in every fabric store. It was a unique experience. We offered a more refined selection for crafters and designers who wanted something extra special. I loved every moment of my time there — the interaction with customers, the joy of seeing the perfect fabric for a project, and the pride in working for a company with such a rich history. There were times I even considered climbing the corporate ladder and moving into management with Joann. However, that opportunity didn’t materialize at the time, but the memories of that period remain.
Joann Fabrics itself has been a staple in the fabric and crafting world since 1943, a remarkable legacy that spans over 80 years. What started as the Cleveland Fabric Store in Ohio eventually became Joann’s in 1963, named after the founder’s daughter. It’s incredible to think about how this company grew into the largest fabric and crafting supply store in the U.S. — a true giant in the industry. The sheer scale of it all is hard to overstate. But now, as we look at the changing landscape, it’s clear that this chapter is coming to a close. It's sad to think that Joann, as we know it, will no longer be around in the same way. It’s not just a store closing; it’s the end of an era for crafters and fabric enthusiasts who have relied on them for so long.
As I reflect on the past, I can't help but wonder what the future holds for the crafting and fabric world. Who will take the mantle from Joann? With the doors closing on one of the industry’s giants, it certainly opens up the space for new players to emerge. Will a new company step up to lead the charge, or will we see a shift in how we approach crafting and fabric shopping? The possibilities are wide open, and it will be interesting to see who or what will rise to the occasion.
I’m grateful for the experiences and memories I gained during my time with Joann, and while it’s tough to say goodbye, I’m excited to see what the future of crafting holds. So, I’ll leave you with a final walkthrough video of the store, a tribute to the legacy of Joann Fabrics.
